T43P GPU missing chip cap

#1 Post by nmi » Wed Jun 16, 2010 2:29 am

I purchased a set of T43P mobos that were supposed to be good but are not. it looks as if someone was a bit too aggressive stripping parts and damaged the boards. Most of them hang at the IBM splash screen unless I press down on the Southbridge chip. One in particular has lost the top of the FireGL GPU, it probably went with the fan. Now, there are five smaller squares instead of one larger one, the center is presumably the main GPU core. It sits a bit lower than the other four squares, so if a flat surface were laid across the assembly, there would be a slight gap in the middle, above the core.

This board does appear to run, and will boot into BIOS, although the GPU gets hot quickly and so it is necessary to power the board off after a very short time.

It seems a shame to waste the board, it's a "P" version. Can anyone suggest a way to repair this damage, the missing GPU top, in a way that will ensure cooling for the GPU?

Post a WTB Ad in the Marketplace forum and ask for the GPU cap. IIRC it just snaps on, but you can also use thermal glue to reinstall it.

If you're careful, you can take the cap off from one of the bad boards, and re-attach it to the good one within minutes...
