T42 XP load heats up T43 CPU ??!!

OK, gurus, here's something I've seen twice in the past couple of weeks, so I'm pretty sure I'm not imagining it.

I swapped a hard drive with WinXP on it from a T42 into a T43p to test a lockup issue, got the usual "new hardware" messages but everything was working after the OS quieted down, excepting I noticed that the CPU seemed to be running hot, like 70C under normal running. Selecting manual high speed operation using tpfancontrol helped some, but not enough to make things what I consider normal. Since it was a new, untested board which seemed to run fine but could have been faulty, I tried a fresh XP install, and sure enough everything ran cooler.

Tonight, I swapped an 80GB drive that passes the T43 BIOS litmus test from my T42p into a waiting T43. Once again, driver installs went fine but the CPU spiked back up above 70C! Different machines, different loads, similar results. This particular T43 has been running Win7 for over a year with CPU temps consistently around 50-55C.

The question is, why would this be happening, and more importantly how can I make the T42p load run cool in the T43? I really want to keep this load, which has many custom apps on it, intact. It seems like something got configured at OS installation time that needs to be removed and installed correctly for the T43.

My guess is that the differing HALs (hardware abstraction layers) between the T42 XP load and the T43 XP load is causing you problems. Try this next time - http://www.mostlycreativeworkshop.com/Article11.html
