Your install of xp must be corrupt... What you can do is back up your files to usb with a linux live cd. I recommend Puppy Linux because it doesn't read windows file permissions, so you have full access to everything. It is also a relatively small download.

1.) On a different system, download the .iso file with the link above.
2.) With a different system, use a program like ImgBurn to write the image to a blank cd. Do not just copy the file to the cd, it will not work.
3.) Put the cd in the drive of the t43, start it up and press F12 when you see the IBM splashscreen. Select "Optical Drive" or "CD Drive" or something like that from the menu that appears. Puppy Linux will now load and ask you a few questions.
4.) When that's done, plug in your usb drive and click on the icon that appears on the desktop. (sdb something) That mounts the drive. Now you have to mount the hard drive. That should also be on the desktop, listed as sdA something. Verify this is the correct drive by seeing folders like WINDOWS, Program Files, and Documents and Settings.
5.) If you got the correct drive, go to the corresponding locations of your files and copy them to the usb. Your "My Documents" folder is under Documents and Settings\User name.
6.) Unmount the usb and hard disk drives by right-clicking the icons on the desktop. Shut down puppy linux and remove the cd.
7.) Reinstall XP using the reinstall partition on your drive. To do this press "Access IBM" when the IBM splash screen is up, and select "Predesktop Area" from the menu. The procedure is pretty straightforward from there.

I hope this huge post helps :D
