T43 freezes at desktop sometimes

#1 Post by burns334 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:45 am

I have a T43 that locks up when it gets to the desktop about 80% (the other 20% it seems fine for a little while) of the time so I figured that it was a solder problem (advice on this forum) with the GPU or something. I bought a replacement tested motherboard from a big seller on ebay and same problem, he replaced and same problem. I removed the wifi card and ethernet card from the unit both times, still same problem. The second unit would bomb sometimes in the bios, freeze up or long beep. The hard drive works fine on another T43. The ebay seller says the unit works fine when I returned it, does this make sense? Can the LCD make a machine freeze up? ie frozen cursor on the desktop or freeze up at the splash screen?

Try powering it on with no battery installed and see whether it freezes.

Good luck.

ajkula, I was powering without a battery by sheer luck or shortage of batteries.

Have you tried swapping the RAM with another T43?

When you fit the CPU and fan, you need to clean off the old heatsink compound and replace with a very thin amount of new stuff.

Normally if it's a problem with an overheating CPU due to poor fan assembly contact it will shut down but thought I'd mention this.

Can you try the CPU from the other T43 in there as well.

With the wifi card out, try pressing on the Southbridge chip underneath. Does this "unfreeze" it?

akj, I already shipped the motherboard back to the seller so I can't try that one out.
georgdie, like I said above but the shipped entire base with so all I had to do was connect it up. It quit immediately so I don't think it was an overheating problem.

The seller says when he "tests it" it works fine, I think it's BS, he is going to refund my money so now I am out about $35 with all the shipping. I am going to look for another motherboard on the forum instead of ebay.
