Intermittent Clicking sound from T42

#1 Post by plasdom » Sun Mar 06, 2005 9:03 pm

I have a T42 2378FVU. Once in a while I will hear a very very short 'whirr' followed by a fairly loud click. This does not happen frequently but fairly regularly when I am using it. The sound seems to come from the right side. Is this normal? I just discovered a dead pixel also although it does not bother me that much. I have had the thinkpad less than a month. Should I return it?

EDIT: I think it is from the DVD/CDRW combo. What is going on there. There is no CD/DVD in it

does the click sound only happens when u shake ur laptop??

if i'm not wrong, its the IBM anti-shock mechanism for ur hdd..

not a problem at all..

nope. That is what I thought also. Completely random it seems. Not related to the mechanism

A lot of intermittent clicking sounds tend to come from the HDD, which is right next to the optical drive (under the right palm rest), and also whirs when it spins up. To verify that it's coming from one drive or the other, it might be a good idea to remove the optical drive for a day or so and see if it still happens?

Hi Plasdom,
Approximently how loud is it? That sounds like the drive spinning down and head parking due to idleness. I believe with active protection it only parks the head while the drive continues spinning so you only hear a click then.

I would say it is fairly loud. Especially the click. It is very noticeable especially since the thinkpad is so quiet

I'm experiencing the same loud sound on my R51 1829-L7G and I think it comes from the HDD. It does not seem to be related to the IBM anti-shock protection because it persists even you disable it.

Learned from another post here.
You can download an ATITOOL and go to "Settings", "HDD Acoustic Management" to set Acoustic Management to "Min. Noise".

It works to my T42.
