For those with the same idea of upgrading their aging T42s etc.
In spite of writing that the 2.0G Centrino might produce too much
heat for only a small speed gain over the 1.8G. I was wrong!
The 2.0G is very fast and so far I haven't run into any heat problems
at all! Maybe the T43 (intel) fan is really doing a superlative job?
I also got a 1G memory chip, for a total of 1.5G which gave me an
additional boost.
So I started with a pretty basic 14.1" T42 with 512m ram.
Upgraded to:
Complete SXGA lid
Bluetooth with LED plates
7200rpm Hard Drive
2.0G CPU
1.5G Ram
Motherboard upgrade to 64M ATi graphics.
Fingerprint reader
T43 'intel GPU' fan (covers northbridge and GPU).
All pretty easy stuff but that's as far as I'm going with this one!

T42 upgrade.. final
Re: T42 upgrade.. final
Very nice upgrade. Could you post system temperatures with normal office work and "Maximum Performance" settings from TPFanControl Utility? I have brand new fan, covering only CPU + GPU. I have done also southbridge cooling mod - but I not used that Guido's one, however my own southbridge cooling mod. I am transferring heat to the optical drive metal cage instead of PC Card cage. I am also planning build passive heatsink for northbridge chip.
My temps (Maximum Performance, office + internet work) are sometimes near to 80 degrees of Celsius (flash video on YouTube for example), but usually I have about 60 - 70 deg. of Celsius during normal work. If I switch Power Manager to Maximum Batter Life, I am on temperatures between 40 - 50 deg. of Celsius. What about you?

Re: T42 upgrade.. final
The temperature readings in my machine are close to yours. 48C at boot, 56C under normal load and 80C with full screen video.
All temps are with AC and the Battery Maximizer set to default. Running on battery drops the temps by 1 or 2 degrees.
As I write this the temperature is holding stady at 512C with the fan at 2964 rpm using AC.
