I want to try the trick where you place some pieces of paper between the keyboard and the Southbridge chip - intermittent flexing failure, until I can get a replacement. I took out the keyboard, and it doesn't match a picture I found. What is the Southbridge behind? Is that chip in the middle with the smaller blue square in the middle the GPU? I'm wondering now if that trick was just for the GPU, and not the Southbridge - the only other exposed chip is the memory. I want to remove as little as possible to try the temporary fix.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
The Southbridge chip in the T41 should be labeled with an Intel part number of 82801DBM ICH4-M. I believe that it is below the area where the touchpad is on the keyboard bezel/palmrest.

You'll find it under the wifi card, at the front of the laptop. Big chip with Intel on it.
You'll need to remove the palm rest/keyboard bezel and wifi card to fully see it.
