Can I get recovery disks for a T43?

#1 Post by phil917k » Fri Jul 23, 2010 5:17 pm

Hi,
I've got a T43 purchased off Ebay. Worked fine for a while but the hard disk seems to have failed. I tried the Lenovo bootable diagnostics program and this confirms. :(

It came without the original recovery partition so I didn't get a chance to create recovery disks. Is there any chance that I can get a set from somewhere to reinstall Windows on a replacement hard disk?

Any suggestions welcome.

Phil, what kind of T43 is it? On the base it will have machine type and model e.g. 1871-FWG or 2669-PDG. I have a set of recovery disks for 1871 (15" models) which you can borrow if you pay the postage both ways. It won't cost you a lot. :)

Hi killer,

Its a 14-inch model - type 2669 - so I guess your set may not work out. Thanks for the offer though.

No, Phil, my set doesn't cover the 2669 models. I wish you luck though.

I have used a 1xxx set on a 2xxx T43, so maybe they are interchangeable. It will boot, then run System Update and the proper video driver will download.

Pardon if a bit off topic but what are the benefits of using recovery discs rather than an MS installation disc?
What does the blue, IBM recovery button give me? I know the button requires the recovery installation.
I recently got an X31 and have a T4x 2373 on it's way.
I intend to put W7 and Puppy Linux or Fedora on the X31 and haven't decided what I'll be putting on the T4x.
What am I losing by not using IBM recovery discs? Are they available for purchase from Lenovo?
The X31 has a COD (COA?) sticker on the bottom for XP-Pro. Does that mean I can get free discs from MS that installs the OS and IBM partition?

Using recovery disks is much less expensive, or even free if you can borrow a set appropriate to your machine. If you install a set from MS, you have to buy it at full price. If you try to use an MS set, it will not install using the COA on the machine, AFAIK, I believe you will be violating the license unless you have a full set with key. A recovery disk, as long as it is for your model, whether you get it from Lenovo, a friend, or a third party, is legal to install on your Thinkpad. You will not need any key to install legally.
