Adding bluetooth to a T40

#1 Post by kge420 » Mon Aug 02, 2010 10:56 am

I have a T40 and I want to add an internal BT module.
Questions:
1: Do the function keys turn the service on/off?
2: Level of difficulty installing antennae, 1-10 scale.
3: If I buy this; http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-Thinkpad-T40-LE ... _500wt_717
How would I light the BT icon on the bar?
I know there are much easier ways to achieve this but this is a pet project of mine.
Thanks, Keith

Hi Keith

1. Not sure but probably.

2.It's not too difficult but depends on how good you are at things like this. If you're OK with stripping and rebuilding a Thinkpad you should be OK.
Refer to the Hardware Maintenance Manual on how to route the cable etc.

3. That strip looks OK. I believe there's a Bluetooth LED on all the T4x inverters which will now light.

Have fun!

Thanks, Nick.
Looking at part #27R1880
Do you or anyone else know if this will work in my T40?
Thanks, Keith

Yes it will work, assuming you update BIOS and EC to the most recent ones if you haven't already done so.

I have applied the "no 1802" fix to this T40. Can I expect any issues with the bios when installing the BT card? Thanks, Keith

... also "update EC". I am not familiar with this acronym.

EC = Embedded Controller

I doubt that you'll see any errors with that BT card if you're running the latest BIOS.

$9 for a new one and free shipping. I have used these guys for iPod hard drives. Good source and prices.
Thanks, Keith
