Yeah...my NEC showed up as 8X too but I started noticing that the speed of the burn was fluctuating...all in all...average was around 6X, which I'm not complaining about as this still beats the heck out of Panasonic/Matshita and I'm getting burns that can be viewed in all my stand-alone's and computer DVD players without error.
