My experience with the recovery CD's IBM sent me for my T40p was as following:
you don't need the XP serial number at the bottom of your Thinkpad if you delete all partitions, restore the hidden HPA with the recovery CD's and after that doing a recovery from the bios. In this way the Thinkpad need no activation because a Volume License Key is being used.

T40p 2373-g1g: 1.6 GHz, 1536 MB RAM, 160 GB @ 5400 rpm drive, 64 MB Video, IBM a/b/g II, CD-RW/DVD Combo II, M10 Fan, Ubuntu 8.04
s0larian can you explain in more detail how you use the restore cds to avoid having to activate windows? I just purchased a refurbished t42 and when i turned it on the software didn't install properly and ibm is sending me the cds to restore things. What you suggested sounds great, but being a newbie with the T42 I couldn't figure out some things you said...like "restore the hidden HPA with the recovery CD's and after that doing a recovery from the bios"..how? thanks
With the proper recovery CD's (from IBM or made from newer Laptops), the recovery will not ask you for activation. The restore process from CD will build the Pre Desktop Area (F11 recovery), built the OS and the IBM software, and activate silently. If it wants to activate, the recovery has gone bad and needs to be redone (been there, done that) ... JD Hurst
