T43 power jack problem

#1 Post by Lammo » Mon Aug 09, 2010 2:21 am

So. The kids left a door open and the new puppies got in and chewed through the DC side of the power adapter on my T43 (good thing it was the DC side or I think we might also be down a dog). I had a spare power adapter but when I plug it in I get no connection - - no green battery light and my battery is discharging. My question is whether the little fuzz ball caused a short to blow some sort of internal fuse or somehow otherwise fouled up the power jack. The power adapter is sending 16V DC down the wire. (I should note that the jack seems a bit loose. I will try bending the pins as suggested in another thread).

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The dog could have easily blown a fuse in the Thinkpad due to chewing through the DC cord. Try checking F2 (with a multimeter) near the DC jack on the systemboard.

Cool. Thanks. I think I can do that. Just one question - - would replacing the fuse require any soldering? That is one of several things electrical that I just can't seem to get the hang of (re-wiring my well pump and putting a service panel in my shop didn't require any soldering or I wouldn't have been able to even start those jobs!). Thanks again.

If the fuse is blown, you can "piggyback" solder the new one on top of it.
This requires only minimal soldering skill.

My soldering skills don't reach minimal when it comes to something that is smaller than a Pez when it's under a magnifying glass. Took it to a local shop, they piggyback soldered a new fuse on and, since I am typing this on my previously drained T43, I am now back in business. Thanks to all.
