Starting T42P with Wireless ALWAYS off?

Hi folks-

I'd like to be able to set my T42P such that the WiFi card is automatically turned off at the end of the session, and DOES NOT turn on when I reboot. I want to have to manually turn it on (such as with the Fn-F5 utility) it after rebooting.

So far, it seems like I have to manually turn it off before shutting down if I want it off when I reboot. And sometimes even then it turns itself on.

Any helpful suggestions?

Out of interest, why do you want to do all this manually?

Not sure what sort of app will automatically know when your session has ended - this would still require some manual input even if it existed so you're better off doing what you are currently doing!

I don't think Access Connections can be set to do what you've mentioned either

Hi Steve-

I'm debugging a problem with my XP login. The problem manifests as a svchost.exe error just before the point at which the user gets to hit ctrl-alt-del and log on.

It seems to be related to services that startup during boot that may attempt to access the network before the network is ready for them. It doesn't seem to happen if the wifi is all the way off.

But the problem is intermittent so I'm having trouble pinning it down.

So, I'm trying to set things up such that the wifi will ALWAYS be off when I boot, and stay off until I turn it on. If the problem stays gone, I'll be one step closer to understanding this very frustrating problem.

My computer is all set up, working perfectly except for this one thing. But when it happens, I have to reboot and pray. Sometimes I need to go in with F8 and do a safe mode logon, disable some services, and reboot again... really annoying.

The computer has certain corporate things on it that I can't re-install, so starting from scratch isn't an option.

If you define your wireless connections to Access Connections, then it will disable the radio if it doesn't find a valid connection on startup. You can try telling Access Connections to ignore the wireless profiles, but I don't know if that will work. If you connect up to a wired connection, AC will turn off the radio. What more are you looking for? ... JD Hurst

Actually, if I tell it to use the wired connection, but it doesn't find the network cable plugged in (because I'm attempting to start up network-less), it seems to switch to start using the wireless profiles, and on comes the wifi card.

Grrr.

Mostly this seems to be a weird conflict of some sort. I've turned off Windows Automatic Updates, the IBM Message center, and similar stuff that happenes automatically. I'm getting frustrated.

I don't think the problem is specifically with Access Connections (3.70) but exacerbated by it. If I disable all the AC stuff in MSConfig and reboot, I don't see the problem.

I was experimenting with Access Connections and the result was a failure to start on occasion (enough occasions to be most annoying). I don't recall it was svchost, but I don't remember. I had tried uninstalling AC and wireless and reinstalling but that did not help. What did help was to run Registry First Aid (Rose City Software). No problems since and no need to reload the machine (which I do not like to do).

Properly setup, applications requiring network access will wait until the network is running. Consider asking the corporate support department to try the solution above or offer a different solution.

Cant you simply disable the wireless card in the start-kontrol panel-system-hardware and then whatever its called in english?
