t40 hard drive going - what drives are compatible

#1 Post by Mara82 » Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:37 am

My T40, which is 7 years old, is having hard drive problems. Twice the machine has put up a blue screen saying it was stopping because it wanted to avoid damage and it started to take a minidump tho I turned the machine off after I saw the message. The last time this happened was when I was running a defragmentation. Also before that I had to run a check disk with repair before I was able to write an image to a USB drive.

The drive is a Hitachi DK23EB-40B and the controller is Intel 82801DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CA. I got this information thru the system option of control panel and I need to know what drive(s) I can use as a replacement. I would like to keep this machine running even tho I plan to get a new machine; I have a program I run rarely that won't run on Windows Vista or Windows 7 without a costly upgrade.

Any 2.5" IDE (ATA6) laptop hard drive will work in a T40. For example -

or

I highly recommend the drive of the second link. I have used it in several laptops and I do actually notice a performance increase compared to other 2.5" ide drives. Some say the HM160HC is the fastest ide drive on the market, limited only by the slower interface.

+ 1 for Samsung, I've used dozens of them in a variety of T4x/R5x and A3x machines and have nothing bad to report.
