T40 very slow to start and then freezes on and off.

#1 Post by kingman99 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:48 am

Hi

It takes soooo long before it's up and running. I bought my T40 years ago on Ebay and l have the microsoft
XP pro 1-2 cpu sticker underneath. I had at one time a cd but l can't find it.

When l hit the Acess IBM button l found something that said complete erase and in another section something about downloading a system.

I would like to start all over

Please advise

Alan

If you press the Blue Ibm/Thinkvantage button at startup, you might get a menu with the option to restore the laptop to ex-factory status.
This works only if the restore partition is still intact.
If not, get a set of T40 restore CDs, either from IBM/Lenovo, or put a WTB ad in the Marketforum.

You could also try and run CCleaner (free download) and run that, to get rid of all the amassed junk.
Maybe that improves a bit?
Also, make sure you use 2x1GB PC2100 or PC2700 RAM, and perhaps a 5400 or 7200RPM hard disk.
Those 2 usually improve performance quite a bit.

Hi

Thanks for the quick reply, how do l know if the restore partition is still intact?

I'm still a newbie!

Is there a charge from Lenovo on the CD and if there is l would rather buy it here.

If you don't get that menu, your restore partition is either not there or unusable.
Lenovo will ask ~$50.-, our Marketforum will be cheaper.
