blue screen,but machine is working,Now error 0231.

#1 Post by raptorhertz » Sat Sep 04, 2010 10:08 am

Few days back, Thinkpad failed to boot, Blue screen came four times and error was Unable to mount boot volume.Later, the machine started normally and fully functional.Yesterday, the clock time changed on it's own.Today it showed the error 0231, I had to set the time in BIOS and boot the machine. After working for few hours, the date changed on it's own. I am typing from the same machine, the Machine is still under warranty. What would the solution for this problem?

Run PC-Doctor diagnostics on the laptop.

What Harry said. Although the list says this for the error:

0231 System RAM error. System RAM failure at offset nnnn.

With solutions of either:

1. DIMM.
2. System board.

...The "unable to mount" is interesting.

My guess would be to replace the CMOS battery.

I did have a T20 that had a similar problem where that was the cause.

Not the exact same errors as listed here, but presenting a bunch of various ones, and sometimes it would work fine. That usually was if I'd let it alone for a few days. I presume, now, that was because the CMOS battery had built up a bit of a charge...

What could have the reason for the blue screen?

Edit:-Used PC-Doctor, although all the test were passed, but when I clicked on hardware event log, at first the PC hanged, after restart, when I clicked hardware event log,the blue screen came,it mentioned that PFN_list_corrupt.Kindly check that hardware/software is properly installed and updated. It's strange indeed.

Hmm, here's a thread on annoyances.org on that error:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1034931646

I see for some there, it did turn out to be bad ram, just as the 231 error resolution suggested. But there were a few other things that fixed it for other folks.

Try this:
Remove the RAM modules, put them back in, repeat 2 or 3 times (to rub the insides of the RAM slots).
Then use an eraser on the gold edge-contacts on both sides of the RAM modules.
You'll see them shine nicely again.
Remove the eraser debris with a little brush (don't touch the contacts) and reinsert the cleaned RAM.

I need some info on RAM, Did Kingston RAM module came as OEM with Thinkpad T43 from IBM factory? I checked the modules, both are of Kingston, KTM- TP3840/1G FRU-40E8996.
