Which linux distribution for a T40?
Which linux distribution for a T40?
I've been running Ubuntu for a couple of years on my T40. I'm currently running 10.04. I did have to use the alternate install disc for 10.04. The regular one seemed to hang. Other then that it installed without a hitch and works well out of the box. I've installed Chromium for a little extra web performance boost. It doesn't seem to be doing any cpu throttling (speedstep) out of the box. I'll have to investigate cpufreqd if I end up running on a battery a lot.
Anyone running anything else?

I ran Debian on my T43p with absolutely no issues. (I've since put the machine into storage, so my experience is about 3 months old -- but it worked great then!)jonah255 wrote: Anyone running anything else?

I have a T43 2686-DJU and have ran FreeBSD (multiple versions) over the past few years, planning to install FreBSD 8.1 Release in the next week or two.

If you like the ubuntu feel, give a try to Mint, same base but a slightly better hardware / configuration out of the box.

Agree with the post above. I put Linx Mint on my T42 and it was painless and runs great.
Re: Which linux distribution for a T40?
As a little side note, since Ubuntu 10.10 was released recently, Mint 9 upgrades had some problems (nothing major though) so, in an urge to have the very latest on my old laptop, I installed Kubuntu 10.10.
First, the last Ubuntu adds some multimedia codecs out of the box so its a bit like Mint on that. They ask a designer to build a font, named "Ubuntu" .. that is deliciously readable, and beautiful. My first reaction when I saw that was "who put a mac in my thinkpad.."
Plus KDE 4.5 is fast now, and quite pretty too.
Of course when Mint 10 will be released I'll check it out ( they used to do wonders so... )
my additional 2cts

Re: Which linux distribution for a T40?
I'm not sure an older ubuntu would be better, I run the 10.10 on a x31 so it doesnt require much, and the hardware support is better out of the box.
