T42: cpu doesn't clock down anymore, always on full speed

#1 Post by indessen » Wed Sep 08, 2010 7:24 am

Hello,

I have a T42 (2376-HG2). For a few days now, the CPU does not go into slow mode anymore, it it always on full speed. I also run tp_fancontrol, so I can see the temp going up even in wait-state (I check the task-manager for cpu usage and processes).

I ran a cpu speed measuring program, it showed full speed even when Thinkpad batterymaxizer-setting are on SLOW and also when I set the CPU to slow in the BIOS.

I tried reinstalling power management software and also to reinstall BIOS, the latter does not work, it gives me the message that BIOS does not need updating.

I had some virus's recently but I am not sure there is a connection, as when I run my backup-HDD the problem is also there.

Does anyone have a clue what may be going on with my T42 and know how to fix it?

Appreciate all replies...
A.

use thinkpad battery maximizer. create your own power scheme. there's a choice for CPU speed: select adaptive. you can do this for battery and AC settings.

i am using thinkpad battery maximizer, in case that wasnt clear I just editited the post and added "thinkpad" before batterymaximizer.

anyhow, i have been using thinkpad battery maximizer all the time, but now that the problem occurs with the cpu, batterymaximizer-settings dont do a thing... i can set it all on slow, cpu is still at full speed (also when I set BIOS to slow).

There's something very wrong with that picture.

How many processes do you have running on a freshly booted machine?

i cant make sense of it either. it seems like the speedstepping is "broken".

56 processes. but it's definitely not that. when i dont do anything on the computer, the cpu usages is at 0-2%, yet the cpu runs at full speed (1700hmz) and does not clock down to 600Mhz, i.e. the CPU gets hot without fan cooling.

I have reset the BIOS and changed one or two settings and managed to boot the computer so that the cpu speed is at 600Mhz... but it doesnt clock up to 1700mhz when needed. I cant even make sense of the BIOS setting w.r.t. to which one is making the cpu permanently slow. anyway, when the cpu is at 600mhz, it doesnt get hot.

as mentioned in my initial post, the laptop used to run fine with current settings until recently. which makes this so weird...

how about running linux distros like fedora and opensuse? these 2 have "on-demand" cpu applets that you can see how many % is the speed, if its speeding up or slowing down ...

i have not tried the "live" versions of these 2, but i have them installed in my t42 and t40. both show the cpu applet slowing down or speeding up ...
