Lenovo thinkpad power manager displays incorrect battery

#1 Post by maik » Sat Sep 11, 2010 3:06 am

Hi,
I just realize one problem about my Thinkpad. The Thinkpad power manager displays incorrect battery so my computer shutdown unexpectedly without any alarm. I don't know whether this is the bug of the software or the battery itself. I just replaced my old battery with an OEM part. Unfortunately, I threw away the old one because it's dead already so I don't have another battery for testing. Anyone has this problem or idea about this? Thank you so much in advance.

I already updated the BIOS and power manager software including the driver to the latest version but the problem still exists.

If power manager shows a significant remaining percentage that suddenly drops to zero, then you have one or more bad cells in your battery. When you say OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) that implies you bought an original genuine IBM battery. Is that correct? If so, what is the FRU number on the battery and the manufactured date listed in power manager?

Hi Harryc,
It's not suddenly drop to zero in the power manager. The power manager shows around 25-30% and then the notebook suddenly shutdown without any warning. After I press the power button to start the machine again (without AC only the battery), the notebook cannot start. It seems like there is no power so I plug the AC and the notebook can start again. Once I check with the power manager, it shows the battery is almost empty (around 2%). This seems like that there is an error of the power manager for displaying the battery correctly.
For the battery, I should not say it is an OEM, it should be called a replacement one. Here is the detail:
FRU : IBM-COMPATIBLE
Manufacture Date 2009-12-02
Furthermore, when the AC is unplugged, only percentage of the battery can be shown (incorrectly I guess) but the remaining time cannot be shown (it only shows 0 minute which is weird to me). I heard people talk about the error of the power manager but I don't know whether it can be applied to my case.
Finally, thank you so much for your comment as always.

That's a Chinese knock-off. Their electronics are just not up to the standards of an IBM/Lenovo battery.
By OEM next time (which in this case is IBM/Lenovo)
or go Green with these DR.Battery ones: http://www.laptopcharge.com/category/no ... y/ibm.aspx

Hi RealBlackStuff,
I was considering about the Green Series from Dr.Battery too but the problem preventing me from choosing it is the compatibility with the IBM docking. Do you have other good OEM the battery besides Dr.Battery?

Thanks,

You could take the battery out before putting it in a dock...
This one seems reliable, but I don't know them: http://shop.ebay.com/laptopz-outlet/m.h ... ksid=p3686
