Install Windows on Empty HDD

#1 Post by sachin » Fri Mar 11, 2005 7:25 am

Hello Friends,

I have Thinkpad T23 - 2647-8MA model.

Yesterday, Due to virus, I had lost my partition table. I am not able to recover it.

I had copied i386 to CD long before. I had done installation from that CD at that time service partition was their.

This time, Installation is giving me error “EULA – End User License Agreement not found”.

My thinkpad is Out of warranty and IBM had not given me recovery CDs.

So, Can you tell me, How can I reinstall the Windows XP License copy. Or. I have to forget license.

Or, From any place, I can download Recovery CDs.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,
Sachin

( Sorry friends, I had posted it in Windows forums also )

You can try to burn your WinXP CD from the i386 folder, see

http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_XP_ ... /index.htm

or ask Bill (the admininstrator of this forum) for a set of recovery CDs

Hi,

Thanks for giving me reply.

I had gone thru this site.. It's really help me...

http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_XP_ ... /index.htm

But in Step 10:

They had written :
1- Boot up your TP.

2- When you see the IBM screen, press F1. This will take you to the BIOS.

3- Select Security.

4- Select IBM Predesktop Area and Select Disable.
But I don't have such security menu under that.

And I don't have any partition in my machine..

Please help me.. otherwise.. I have to put thinkpad in garbage :(

Once again thanks for reply

Regards.
Sachin

The most straight forward way to reload with the i386 folder and nothing else is to find a Win98 Startup disk or a Freedos disk and boot from it.

Use FDISK to create a single partiton (FAT32, but you can easily CONVERT to NTFS later if needed), then restart, Boot from the floppy again and type FORMAT C: and press enter. BTW don't bother fooling with this method if you have a 60GB or 80GB hard drive. Unless you're OK with a 32GB or so C: drive(most people who have a 60 or 8-0 are not).

Next, Navigate to the i386 directory & type WINNT.EXE and press enter to start windows setup.

But you may see the same error that way.

You may need a new copy of Windows. Threre were some early i386 hard drive loads, and even some early Recovery CD's that were crippled in various ways. Mostly missing key files. On purpose to prevent exactly what you are doing.

It's also possible that when you were backing up folders and files you didn't backup everything needed or the directory structure was changed in some way.

You could obtain an unlicensed (or pirated if you wish) copy of Windows and use the license number that came with your Thinkpad. It is still legal because you own a license. It does not matter where your media came from.

If you have a COA sticker on the bottom of your Thinkpad you are licensed to have windows. The disc you get from is irrelevant as long as you install using the number on the bottom of your TP.
In fact when you use a restore disc you are not even using the license number you have, you are using a bulk number.
Get a disc and install using you number.

Exactly my point. Just make sure that the source disc you are using is error-free.

The T23 model does not have a bios protected hidden partition. Just skip this step.

Mine does. If you use the recovery discs on a drive with no partitions it asks if you want to have the recovery partition and it will create a partition which is accessed by pressing F11 at bootup to restore the system.
This partition is not seen by windows but partitioning tools can see it and turn off the hidden status. I don't think it can be unhidden by the bios though.

Mine does.
No, the hpa is not bios protected but just hidden. In contrast to the t4x models the previous models like T23, A31 do not have the bios option to "unhide" the hidden partition.

Sachin, thanks for the location info you provided. But, please put it IN your PROFILE. It will help those answering you about such issues as "IBM will not sell backup disks".

He's got a T23. I expect that IBM doesn't distribute those disks any more regardless of his location.

Hello Friends,

Thanks a lot for your support.

Actually, I won the battle with local IBM Thinkpad Service Center. I had purchased thinkpad on 19th Apr 2002. ( It was gifted by IBM ) so, My warranty should over on 19th Apr. 2005.

But Local Service center person was telling me that My warranty was over on 29th Nov 2004.

Aftre producting bills and other documents - He was just agree on recover the Service partition and Windows XP.

So, Now, On my thinking i have Windows XP Again. Now, I will definately take backup of service partition.

Regards,
Sachin
