Spontaneous windows XP reboot on T42

#1 Post by memoboy » Thu Sep 16, 2010 8:15 pm

I was wondering if anyone else experiences random software reboots; every once in a while my US Thinkpad T42 will reboot as if I initiated a software reboot from within the XP shutdown menu. I won't be doing anything special or unusual and it will just initiate the reboot sequence.

Not sure if this could be it, but I'd try. It might be automatic updates getting sick of waiting for you, and restarting itself. I have had this happen on OS's from XP to Windows 7.

Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update. Double click "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates", check enabled, click ok.

Also, check the event viewer for what initiated the restart. It is under accessories/system tools in the start menu. Just look for the date and time of when it happened.
