Should there be TrackPoint AND UltraNav in Device Manager

#1 Post by Marc_G » Fri Mar 11, 2005 8:56 am

Hi folks-

Please help me investigate something related to recent problems I've had with my T42P (2373-HTU).

Recently, trying to diagnose some problems, I went into Device Manager, and found yellow exclamation marks next to the soundmax audio device and the trackpoint. Ultranav was fine. The audio device definitely has problems. So I uninstalled the TrackPoint and Audio device with intent to reinstall them. Audio device reinstalled, no exclamation point, but sound is still messed up.

But the system didn't re-detect the TrackPoint as a separate device. Both the pointing stick and the ultranav functionally are doing fine, but there is now no separate entry for the TrackPoint.

Could it be that I had something installed in error?

If anyone with a similar configuration could check in there for me and tell me if there is just UltraNav or both Ultranav and Trackpoint in there, I would be grateful.

Thanks

On ThinkPads with UltraNav, you are definitely not supposed to install the TrackPoint driver. The UltraNav driver includes the TrackPoint device. So in Device Manager, you should see only one entry under Mouse, and it should be the IBM ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device. In the documentation for the track point driver it says not to install the driver to the UltraNav model.

My SoundMax Audio is OK. Perhaps uninstall the sound driver, restart, and install the latest driver. Just as a note, I have not ever seen a recent ThinkPad (going back to the 240x five years ago) that came out of the box with defective drivers (yellow exclamation marks) YMMV.

JD-

Thanks. I wonder why I had an entry for TrackPoint in device manager? Perhaps I screwed up somewhere; maybe this is related to the svchost errors I have been getting on boot-up.

However, my sound is fried. I did a complete reload of the IBM preload onto a new drive. The sound sounds all messed up like a steam whistle on this "virgin" installation, just like with my regular suite running. Must be a hardware problem.

Time to cash in on my 9x5 NBD warranty upgrade.
