T42 2373 memory upgrade - user upgrade query - availability

#1 Post by bobox » Mon Sep 20, 2010 5:46 am

I need to upgrade my T42 2373 memory from its current 1GB, as I keep running out of virtual memory.

The current RAM is mounted on the underside of the laptop. I understand from this site there's another bay 'under the keyboard' for a second RAM.

Two question areas:
1. Is this something that is 'sensible' as a do-it-yourself task? What are the potential pitfalls to watch out for? Where can I get new screws for remounting everything?

2. chip availability: according to my research this machine needs a PC2700(333) 200-pin DDR SO-DIMM chip. But I am currently finding only 184-pin chips online (in the UK). Are 200-pin chips out of production?

Thanks

Incidentally, could someone explain what CAS latency 5-3-3-7 means for this RAM?? thanks!

Well that was silly ... new search finds plenty of 200-pin SO DIMM availability
frustration got the better of me earlier. apologies.

The other question still stands
- is this a sensible DIY type thing to do
& where can I get replacement screws for reassembly

many thanks

It's quite simple - 3 (or 4 if you are on a 14") screws at the bottom, a couple of latches on the keyboard and it comes off. Be gentle, don't force anything, and it won't break.

No need to get new screws for reassembly, use the same ones.

As you noticed, you need DDR333 (PC2700) SODIMM chips. Most of these will be CL2.5 (2.5-3-3-7) anyways, in fact I am not sure I've ever seen any laptop PC2700 chips that had different specs.

Thanks RealBlackStuff, thanks dr_st. I don't come here often but when I do it's great to rediscover the helpful expertise on offer.

I've ordered a GB SO-DIMM from Crucial and will soon be up to greater speed. Thanks for helpfulness.

Cheers

I hope that you realize that "running out of virtual memory" can also happen if your "paging" file is too small or non-existent.
