Hibernate or Standby, what's the difference?

#1 Post by ehsu » Sat Mar 12, 2005 5:57 am

Hi,

Sorry if this has been discuss in other threads already.

I noticed that there are two functions which suspend the laptop. One is Hibernate Mode (FN + F4), and the other is Stand-by Mode (FN + F12).

What are the differences bewteen the two and in which situation either is being used?

thanks,

Standby stops processes and turns off the CPU and hard drive. Power consumption is very, very low and you can move the machine around safely. The machine resumes from suspend quickly because it was already "running".

Hibernate saves the current state to disk in a very large file and turns the machine off. Power consumption should be zero. It takes a while to get started but not quite as long as from cold start.

With either method, if you change location and networking, you may have to refresh the network connection.

Aside from standby still consuming power, the other important difference is that standby continues to potentially generate heat, if the computer wakes up for some reason, which it can do for other reasons than you telling it to, so if you're packing it away in an enclosed bag for transportation, use hibernate.

But it's the other way round: FN + F4 is standby, FN + F12 is hibernation ;)
I never use standby but regularly hibernation.

I have programmed my T23 to get into standby when idle for 15 minutes, and hibernate when idle for 30 minutes. To wake it up when it is on standby for under 30 minutes, I only need to press the Fn key. But when I try to wake it after standby for over 30 minutes, pressing Fn does not work. Besides, the half-moon sleep icon on the right hinge is no longer lit up. I then have to press the power button to wake from standby. But the power button is usually for starting from shut down, or from hibernation! My guess is that the T23 is still "working" while in standby and it moves to hibernation mode after 30 minutes because I had programmed it to hibernate when idle for 30 minutes. I am puzzled. Does the power management scheme still work while the T23 is in standby mode? Any opinion?.
