supervisor password

#1 Post by beerak » Sat Mar 12, 2005 5:24 pm

Hi,

is the supervisor password preset on the IBM laptops ?

How can I check if the supervisor password is enabled ?

I am a little bit lost so I started to be scared that I would need some password for my machine. I did not install it.

Is there some password that one can set during the first installation ?

In other words how can I find there is set some password (e.g. for rescue&recovery, BIOS, supervisor) so I can ask the one who installed it ?

Thanks.

just check if you can access the bios. If so, no supervisor password is set. Same with R&R: press the blue Access IBM Button during boot and see what happens. If you get a password prompt just uninstall R&R and reinstall it again. Then the R&R password should be the same as the XP Administartor password.

Just be very careful and pick a password you are not going to be prone to forget. If you lose that supervisor password you are going to be looking at a planar replacement!

Same goes for the HDD btw.

You "should" like it. Using the feature is optional. If you don't care about security, just don't use it. For those that do care, this robust implementation is what is needed. A "watered down"/defeatable password system that could easily be over-ridden is worse than none.

Every so often someone comes here looking for help with a machine that has had a password set by a friend/co-worker/ex-lover as a prank or revenge. The best defense against this is to set the password yourself. Just make sure you set it to something you will never, ever forget.
