T40 trackpoint/touchpad doesn't work at startup sometimes

#1 Post by John H » Sat Oct 09, 2010 1:32 pm

Sometimes the trackpoint and/or touchpad doesn't work when I startup the T40. Usually it will be OK after I try a couple of restarts. That's true for both the XP and linux partitions, so I don't think it's software, but maybe hardware or BIOS firmware.

Maybe I should try some "Dust-off", but I hate to dislodge internal lint that hasn't been a problem.

The trackpoint and the touchpad on T4X machines are connected via two separate connectors to the systemboard. It is odd that you'd be having an issue with both of them. I would have guessed a driver issue if you hadn't mentioned the same issue occurs in Linux. So, my guess is a systemboard problem. BIOS is unlikely, but you can try to downgrade your current BIOS as a test. You won't be able to install the same version. Just for giggles I'd also try reseating both connectors on the systemboard. It's just a few screws to remove the palm rest and keyboard. Follow the maintenance manual for guidance.
