Hard Drive Password?

#1 Post by mikiki » Wed Oct 13, 2010 7:49 pm

Hello

I had western digital 320 GB PATA disk (WD3200BEVE) inside of my t43p notebook, and I have used Bios option named "Hard Drive Password" to set a password. Since my notebook is broken, I took out disk and put it in USB lid and connected it to other computer. How do i make that disk usable again?

PROBLEM: I cant even initialize disk in Windows, also I cant format it, partition it, or low level format it with western digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostic (it states it cant low lever format it). SMART is OK.

QUESTION:
What do I need to do to be able again to format that disk, partion it and use it normally? Data on the disk is not important, at least I would like to be able to format that disk and partition it from scratch.

I DO KNOW which password I have set using Hard Drive Password option, however, when I connect disk via USB lid to other computer it doesnt ask me for password or anything. It is unusable.

Any ideas what to do?
Any Win/Linux software which can remove Hard Drive Password (i know which pass I set)?

NOTE: I am able to connect disk to other computer only via USB lid.

I am not aware of another (legal) way to do this, other than using another Thinkpad.

Is your T43p completely dead? Or is it just the GPU issue?

You can unlock it in any laptop with ATA interface where the BIOS supports this feature - if you know the password of course.
Current: T420
Previous: T400, T43p Flexview, T40, R52, T43p 14"
My first ThinkPad was 570

... otherwise you have a 'brick'!
HDD password protection was designed to keep prying eyes out, and that it does!
There's been MUCH discussion on HDD passwords here in the forums ... just search.
