 yes, After your reply I had enough confidence to retry. The packing material(grey foam) was shorting the pins.I threatened the material wedged between the pins and dragged it out.

But it is running hot ...at 65 degrees now.Any hints how to run it cooler.

I have just applied cheap thermal paste and have been asked to wait for 24 hrs ...

I don't know how hot it is in India now, but the 1.7Ghz Dothan is a very cool running CPU. It idles in the 45*C range in my T41 at 1.7GHz. If I engage speed-step it idles at 38*C at 600Mhz. 65*C is outrageously high for CPU idle. If you are furiously multitasking, that is another issue. What is running at 65*C?

The thermal paste should only be a fine layer. I put just a drop on the CPU and pat it to spread it out with my finger.
Then double check that you put the fan on correctly, the three fan screws need a good, but even, amount of torque.
Loosen all three then tighten them until you feel just a little resistance then give a quarter turn on one then
another and finally the last. Go back to the first and give it another quarter turn etc until they are all tight and even.
That should do the trick.

Hi,

The way I read this is you installed the 1.7Ghz Dothan with the packing material still on the bottom of the Processor? If you did this take it apart carefully make sure there is NO packing material in the socket. Then renistall the Processor and use THE SILVER GREASE!

at 1700 and 0.988 V i forced the fan on and i get 47 now.
at 600 and 0.700 forced fan i get 38.

These were the temp with battery charging on.without the battery charger it is lower...
why does battery charging ramp up the cpu temp?.

I am reopening the cpu fan, reapplying a thin layer for cpu contact and cheking again....
my cpu runs betwwen 0.7 (600MHZ) and 0.988(1700 mhz).
Isnt this a ULV specs?.
The cute sony VAIO's(ULV's) i touched used to be very cool.
what was their secret.?.

 err.. i forgot to ask...
How do I force the fan to be always on without running any fan control software?

after putting the fan on (bios mode in TPfan control) and reapplying a very thin layer i get
1.7 ghz @ .880V 44 to 47
600 mhz @ .700v 42 to 44

:( Do I try with a expensive silver based thermal paste? or the above values are tolerable to
continue using ...

Hi,

I always use the silver compound! What is the problem.... You are only using a small amount. Use it and you won't be sorry that you did.

The compound you are using now is ok, But it will not be as good. I had a friend bring his brand computer to me to find out why his CPU fan was running at top speed. As it turned out HP uses Cheap compund. I cleaned the Compound of of the CPU put on the silver. Now the computer is running normal.

So the final decision is not up to us. It is up to you.If you feel comfortable with the compound you used, That is Great...

thank you.
I have asked for the 3$==150 Rs paste to put on the 10$ cpu i just got.
:(
well,it turned out that what i got was a silicone based paste(cooler master, thermal compound kit) , expensive but no better than my local cheap stuff. the silver stuff is 8$
but i prefer to let the cpu idle at 46 degrees at maximum performance power setting.at maximum power savings the cpu idles at 42 degress+.May be ,beacuse the surrounding air is not at all cool.(No Ac + october Indian Heat)
now i wait for 2 GHZ old pentium M cpus to become affordable.

You might want to skip the 2.0 and 2.1 Pentium M CPUs - they get VERY hot and won't do your GPU any good!

oh , i have already shifted to a cooler T400.
 I just want to try out heat generating cpus to check effectiveness of thermal pastes.

Harry,
In your reply posting quoted below...What is the room environment when you get these measurements?.
8) I get them only with 24 degree surroundings.

whre would i get a thin heatsink?.
The fan on my T41 is a short fan(?) .
