From all the usual places - GPU (will vary depending on the chip model), southbridge (will vary depending on which SB [there are two different ones depending on T4x model]), wifi card, Northbridge, Hard Drive, and numerous other components which become warm depending on their use in the laptop.
Seems a slightly obvious answer to be honest...am I missing the point of the question?

When I had a T43 and my wife had a T43p we hardly needed the heating on in the house. OK, that's an overstatement, but she now has an X201 and I have a T510 and it is now so quiet and cool.
The T4X series laptops seem to generate heat and noise. That's a factor to be considered about owning them.
No wonder the solder melts. Good for business, Nick.

Dogs must be carried on the escalator. Where can I find a dog?

Err., I just wanted the sources of heat with their generating quantified.
In my case i have a feeling that my choice of a 120GB seagate may have been
stupid,as i see no way to drain or redirect that heat fast to the environment.

Unfortunately I don't think there's any such detailed information like that around.
Bottom line - make sure the Fan Assembly is clear of dust and dirt, and whenever the Fan assembly is removed that the existing heatsink compound is removed and a tiny amount reapplied over the mating surfaces.
Also make sure there's no dirt etc over the vents etc.
Sorry can' be more help. These laptops do get warm and the operating temperature vary from model to model too.
