T30 versus R50e

#1 Post by Grimace11 » Mon Mar 14, 2005 10:51 pm

Hi, i currently own a thinkpad R50e model 1834-AM1, its basically the cheapest new thinkpad i could get. I am finding that its a little too heavy and big for me to lug around everyday and it's also made of cheap plastic so I find it is a little on the flimsy side.

I am thinking of buying either a refurbished T30 or X30 either of which will actually have a faster processor and more ram plus built in wireless over my R50. As I am a uni student I can't afford anything better than these.

My question is, will the T30 be much different from the R50 in terms of quality, size and weight or would it be about the same?
Would I be better of going for the X30?
Should I stick with the R50e?

I also I own a thinkpad 600x and i find that it is a great size, weight and excellent quality - it's just a little slow! So i guess I would love something similar to a 600x - would that be the T30 or X30 series?

I think that you should stick with the R50e. If its a little too heavy for you than you'll probably get used to the weight. I have an R51 and its not that heavy for me(the G series is heavier than that, but I don't care because I don't care about tickness and weight). And its not that big(the G series is bigger than that, but once again I don't care about that). And its true that its made of plastic but at least that its not made of cheap plastic, its made of strong plastic(and that's what I think). And even known that the R series is made of plastic it feels sturdy to me.(and I also don't care what a ThinkPad is made of). I only care about the features of a ThinkPad and not what its made of because I know that the ThinkPad is going to last me long. I could have chosen the T series or the X seires(or another ThinkPad series, like even the G series) but I chose the R series because I really liked it(mostly the R5x's).
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

Ah, to be young with joints that don't ache and nerve endings that don't shriek if we overdo. For some of us, which may or may not include the OP, every ounce we can shed from what we have to carry counts. Getting used to the weight may not be a viable option.

I own a few T4x series models but IBM gave me a T30 as my work PC in 2003 and I hate it. The size and weight is fine, but the screen lid is badly made and has little flimsy plastic parts around the screen that are crying out "break me!". The machine only supports USB 1.1, it runs far too hot as it uses a P4-M CPU.

If you can get a cheap refurbished T30 then that's fine, don't go paying a lot for it when you can get hold of used T4x models on eBay for as little as £400.
