T40 = TANK

#1 Post by miscthree » Wed Nov 17, 2010 5:59 am

Ok, I'm a new member here and I don't have anything to add to this forum at the moment other than I want to say how I admire you thinkpad enthusiasts for the efforts to fixing these awesome machines! I've had my t40 for 5 years and going strong..only now I need more CPU power. But treated right and with a little luck these things will outlive us all!

These things are built like Sherman tanks...true classics!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Nice to hear about your T40. On this forum we only get to hear the stories about the Thinkpads that go bad. So in a way it's good to hear the story about those that work good as well. Because - no matter how enthusiastic we are, I guess that your terms "treated right and with a little luck" are key factors when it comes to keeping a T4x. Luckily we now have a service that can pretty much fix both the Southbridge and the GPU should they come lose, and add more years to our T4x machines.

I have never had any problems with my T4x machines, and I will go as far as saying that the T43 is the laptop I have been most happy with, ever. Performance and reliability wise, the T60 is a better choice these days, but it lacks the "magic" that the T43 has in my eyes.

Ha, ha. At the same time I think we should include a picture of the equipment used for "soldering" back loose components in this T40. :lol:

Hey - that's a picture of my Infrared reflowing equipment - or should that be Infrared incineration equipment??

That will 110% guarantee that if the chip worked before, it absolutely won't afterwards....do you think this is a new business idea - Destroy Repairs?!!

Hi,

Yes, I am also very happy with my T4xs. I've had two, one for personal use since '04 that is still going strong (although with a mainboard transplant on '07), and a T42 that I used for 4 years until the company replaced with a T400. All of them excellent machines...

Yes, I had one T40, one T41 and two T42s. The T40 was fine but the other 3 all had the GPU/Southbridge problem. I think it's because IBM was using lead based solder in the T40 but switched over to RoHS in late 2003 (T41 and later).

Onward and upward :?
