I don't know what relation this forum is with IBM, but I really hope that they are looking at us, so only I can say:

BTW James, have a look at this driver, it is what I am using at the moment, still not as stable as IBM but changelog says: "Few Mobility bugs has been fixed".

Anyway, do you have a long fan and still have the problem? I thought that my crazy short fan is the problem, but I see people with long fan having the problem.

beeblebrox:
I don't recommend Omegas since they are not maintained for a while now, and they were instable for me. I don't understand the connection between PP and frequencies: when using original drivers my TP automatically enables PP but I cannot see any frequency change in ATItool or Radlinker. Do we need enabled PP or simple frequency tuning is enough (could be done with original driver)?

UPDATE:
Link updated, developer team changed server.

thanks Erozsolt, think ill leave my drivers as they are right now, I simply do not trust these third party tweaked drivers - ive had enough BSOD trying to use catalyst to last me a life time these last few days.

It seems i have the short fan although i cannot say for sure, i think my t42 is one of the earlier ones so it might have it. Thought i might add that i amnow 100% sure that this BIOS update is the problem. I have been doing a lot of quiet study recently and so i can hear the fan whirring and how long the cycles are, here is the core problem brought on by BIOS 3.14:

ONCE THE FAN KICKS IN IT NEVER STOPS!!!

When i use my tp on battery it seems powerplay solves this partially as the fan switches on and then off when my tp has resumed an acceptable temp like 38 - 40 degrees.

I simply do not accept that disabling PCMIA slots and wifi card helps as it is a ridiculous solution to a problem that is easily rectifiable by IBM. I am already [censored] that i have to resort to somehow enabling pp whilst on AC.

It pisses me off that my sister-in laws ibook is so perfectly quiet and yet my amazing t42 sounds like its working its [censored] off; it pisses me off more so that this wasnt always the case...

We should send a masssive petition to IBM; i think i am right in thinking this affects a lot of people somaybe we should make them listen....any thoughts??

It seems to me that the fan may be on for a reason, but that is beside the point. Could it be that having the fan on is just more annoying to some people rather than others? I mean what are you doing on your computer? Using intensive 3d applications? Crunching numbers? Downloading lots of files? Doing photoshop work?

In our office we have some of the newest toshiba laptops and their fans are MUCh louder than my t42 dxu. :::shug::: I guess it just doesn't seem to bother me. On a side note, my fan is also MUCh quieter than one that was on an old R series I used to use.

IMO I could care less about fan noise, its usually a noisy grinding HD that bothers me...thankfully the new HD in thinkpads are nearly silent! 8)

FAN stopped

#34 Post by nikemen » Fri Mar 18, 2005 5:14 pm

So, just to try it, I went into DISPLAY and ADVANCED, there were a LOT of tabs there, one of the was powerplay!

I was on battery at the time.

So, I clidked on ENABLED PP, even though it SEEMED to be already enabled, I mean it SAID enabled.

So, I clicked enabled AGAIN, and APPLY.

Lo and BEHOLD, about two minutes later, the FAN stopped, I MEAN STOPPED STOPPED for good. I hadn't heard this silence in oh, bout 12 months.

I was on WIFI, with battery, and the FAN was OFFFFFFF!!

So, I plugged in AC, about five minutes later, FAN was back on again.

Ah well, it was nice while it lasted. i just WISH I could find a way to keep it off most of the time. I mean it doesn't NEED to be on.,

this is a T41, normal fan, most likely short.
second to latest BIOS

anyone, ANYONE finding a cure gets 10$ from me via paypal.

esquire:

Have you tried to listen to music while you are writing something or reading ebooks? Because in some environment that fan noise could be frustrating.

nikemen:
Please look back two posts! There is a display driver, which could be a solution, but it is not as stable as the original IBM.

Yep. I had a thread on this a few months ago. My T40 does the exact same thing - stealthy silent on battery, but noisy when on AC. I don't get it

well,

#38 Post by nikemen » Sun Mar 20, 2005 8:14 pm

Well, mine WASN"T quite on battery untill I hit that switch, or clicked on confirm again. It WAS on enabled, but I did it again. THAT was what has led me to quite on battery.

But, alas, quite on AC is an elusive beast. I can get it to stay quite for a few minutes, but boom it starts up again.

temp stays about 33-34, not high. so, don't know why. I WISH there was a setting for SHUT THE F...ING FAN OFF OVERRIGHT, I KNOW I MAY FRY MY LT, BUT I DON'T CARE.

News: Link updated, have a look!

For me, Omega was very instable, but this seems to be a stable driver (only has bugs when you are in the ATI control panel and change the PP settings, but after it is set there is no problem at all!)

Hi,

I think your poll is not correctly thought off in order to get an idea of the impact of the problem. The reason being that most people *only* know about their model, and not others, so what are they going to vote ? One vote for all models that they have not tested ?....
It would have been wiser to do a yes/no/unknown checkbox for each model.. so that you can figure out more or less the impact of the problem in each model... just a suggestion
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

I agree with FTC.
This poll will have much more meaning if at least yes/no columns are added for each model.
People who own these models but have not experienced any problems are
not accounted for here.
Bill, if its not too much trouble can you modify the poll.
Thanks!
