Ex Kowloon!

#1 Post by JHEM » Wed Mar 16, 2005 12:24 am

UPS says my new baby left Kowloon "today" (1936 15MAR Local) and is enroute. I wonder if this one will make it to Fairbanks in "one" day also, i.e. arrive the same day it left. Should do, they've got almost 22 hours to get there as it was 0200 in Fairbanks when it left Kowloon.

Pray it doesn't get stuck in Customs!

2378-FVU. I've got a fresh 7K60 waiting to go in it along with 1GB RAM and an a/b/g card.

I hope that I can get used to the SXGA+ display again, or there's going to be a bargain available.

Regards,

James

I just bought a new T42p (2373Q1U) that arrived today. It got stuck in customs for two days. UPS showed it was in California when it arrived at my door.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

I see that several have posted that their T42's have shipped direct from Kowloon. I ordered a T43 on Friday and today I receive my tracking information from UPS and it shows an Origin scan from Raleigh, N.C.. Is it possible that IBM has changed it's shipping methods?

The T43 model that I ordered is 266872U.
T420s Intel Core I5 2.6ghz, 160GB Solid State Drive, DVDRW, 14" display w/ HD3000 graphics, Intel AGN, BT, 8GB DDR3 SDRAM, Gigabit Ethernet, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I ordered a T42 (2379DXU) on Friday morning (3/11), it indeed shipped from Kowloon HK. Amazing part was, I paid for 2 day shipping and it arrived Monday morning at 10am. That sort of turnaround blew me away.

If the origin scan for the unit to enter the UPS system is Raleigh, it simply means that the unit you ordered was "in stock" in IBM's warehouse in Raleigh and your unit was shipped from there.

This morning's UPS update shows the unit on the truck and headed for the depths of the Pine Barrens:

Mar 17, 2005 7:06 A.M. LAWNSIDE, NJ, US, OUT FOR DELIVERY

As I am pure of heart and lead a charmed life, the unit cleared Customs in Louisville, KY without a hitch, unlike so many others who saw their new toys sit in durance vile for several days awaiting inspection.

Could also be a case of a particularly astute and aware Customs employee noting who the unit was addressed to and ensuring that it was handled in an expeditious manner.

Update this evening after I have my new baby.

We speak for the monarchy!

Just got an email from IBM sales that states:

"We apologize, but shipment of one or more items in your IBM order XXXXXX, has been delayed. We now estimate that all items in your order will be shipped by 03/24/05."

And yet the online order status page shows the item as delivered! Maybe they're sending me another one gratis to curry favor.

Full report at 6PM. Film at 11!

So far, it's gorgeous, but I fear the SXGA+ display might be a deal breaker! We'll have to take it around the block a few times to see if my one remaining functioning orb is going to be able to live with it. (When in the dock and connected to my new 20.1" UXGA LCD it's simply breathtaking.)

No dead pixels! Perfect display!

Took about 3/4 of an hour to burn all the recovery CDs, but that was with me coming and going so it might have only taken half that overall.

Presently installing the 7K60 and the 1GB RAM I've got for it, holding off on installing the a/b/g card until I make a final decision as to whether it stays or goes. The Intel PRO/Wireless 2200B/G card seems to work well enough, but I haven't really exercised it that much yet nor taken the unit out of the house to test the signal capture ability. But it gives me a good connection to either my 11b or 11g routers.

I've come to believe that "Packing" is Chinese for "we're building it!".

My 2378-FVU is an Express model and is therefore almost always "in-stock". All they had to do to get mine to me was to pull it off a shelf and send it on its way.

Your's probably really is being assembled to order in keeping with IBM's JIT assembly program.

I have received my new toy today and it does seem that my T43 shipped direct from Raleigh, N.C.

There is no indication anywhere on the box that this item originated from HK.

I have to say it definitely is a well built machine and there appears to be no bad pixels. Enough for now...I just finished setting up the finger print reader and now I am off to install my personal goodies :D

Did you "sniff" the packing material for any evidence of Tsingtao?
