Dual channel PC2100 / PC2700 issue

#1 Post by xtypestereotype » Wed Mar 16, 2005 6:04 am

I have a T40 and I want to upgrade to 1GB of RAM
My laptop has a factory original 512MB PC2100 stick and the free slot
Now, IBM say they dont sell PC2100 sticks anymore, and they offer the PC2700 instead
So if I buy a PC2700, do I still get dual channel performance?

Any help would be appreciated... :)

The PC2700 stick will work fine in your computer. You can always use faster chips than what your computer was designed for but depending on the onboard bus speed you won't be able to take advantage of the faster chip speeds. In your configuration the new PC2700 stick will run at PC2100 speed.

"warning/danger Will Robinson!"... DO NOT buy your RAM from IBM... search the threads or pricewatch.com and get the PC2100 stick you need at a reasonable price!

www.dealram.com is a much better source for RAM pricing than pricewatch IMHO.

Thanks James. FEI, I just ran several comparisons through both. dealram.com came out more comprehensive with equal or better deals every time. It just landed on my Favorites. (you must have had that second cup of coffee :-) !)

T40's don't run the RAM in dual-channel by the way, and yes, if you put 2700 in there, it should down-clock it to run at 2100 speeds just fine. If you had only 2700 in it, it might even run at CAS 2 settings instead of CAS 2.5. Nice on an Athlon but I bet you wouldn't notice it on an Intel platform...

www.zipzoomfly.com is a fast, well priced supplier. See FAQ in my sig for more details, only select the PC2100 instead of the PC2700.

Yeah, ZipZoomFly rocks! Just got an LCD from them and I've bought RAM, hard drives, and a whole bunch of other stuff from them in the past. They've always done well by me. Hmm, speaking of which, I should have a package arriving from them today... :)

Is it just the T40 that doesnt do dual channel? Or the whole T4x series?

The only platforms that would likely to run dual channel are T43/P and beyond.

BTW, I ended up buying a brand new PC2100 512MB stick off eBay for 89 bucks... Was that a good deal? It's IBM branded...
