Audio crackle and typing lag on t40 2372-92u

#1 Post by kbrazil » Wed Mar 16, 2005 4:36 pm

I got my rebuilt T40 back from IBM a few weeks ago and have noticed a couple of disturbing new behaviors:

1. When I play music on the machine, the output crackles and hiccups a lot. I've updated the SoundMax drivers to the latest version, but it's still happening. It's as if the machine is no longer shielded properly.

2. There's often a typing lag, especially in browser address bars or email to: fields. I have 1gig of Ram in the machine, and 1.6 Pentium M, so this really should not be a result of lack of memory. As with 1) above, this never happened until I got the machine back. I have disabled as many unnecessary Windows services as I could, but it's still happening. I know IBM replaced the keyboard on the machine (without me asking, which at the time I though was a nice gesture) - could that have anything to do with it.

Any suggestions appreciated. Had anyone else had a mutation experience with IBM support?

Tnx,

Is the sound distorted from both the built in speakers and from line-out (headphones socket)?

Is the typing lag equal, when you type to notepad too?
It could be the fault of some malicious spyware, or some software problem, as both the email-to field and the browser url field search through old records as you type to do auto-completing.

The sound distortion is audible from both internal speakers and jack. What's more, it's progressive, it starts clear, worsens, and ends up sounding totally distorted.

The typing lag generally doesn't happen in notepad or word, however it does happen when typing into the bodies of emails (both in Outlook and Yahoo Mail ).

I don't think I have any spyware, but I need to install Spybot and AdAware anyway, so I will do so and let you know.

For the audio problems you might want to have a look at this thread.

Thanks for the link - IBM are going to replace the system board again, I was able to upgrade my warranty to onsite for $100, so now I don't have to be without my machine for 4 days again. Fingers crossed they don't give me another "from the dumpster" system board.
