Why am I getting the 1802 error...only sometimes??

#1 Post by blue_harvester » Fri Dec 24, 2010 5:52 am

This is strange. I know the "error 1802 unauthorized network card is plugged in" is a common problem with the ThinkPads but what is strange with the T41 that I have is that it only happens on boot-up sometimes!! I just have to reboot a few times in order for it to work. I find that putting some pressure on the keyboard helps too, leading me to believe that there is a loose connection somewhere between the wireless card and the motherboard? I took it apart but couldn't see any apparent connection problem with it.

I bought the wireless card and installed it myself, and up until about a year ago it worked fine. That is when the problem started. I bought the following card:
IBM ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless Mini PCI Card - 91P7416

Any ideas?

Let me guess, you probably take the T41 everywhere, often holding it with one hand while the laptop is open, when you shift it from e.g. the table to the couch, etc.
Your intermittent (now) problem will only get worse.
It's the sign of a Southbridge chip coming unsoldered.
