Error gathering user information....

the system update program [which wasworking nicely till yesterday] now gives
'An error occured while gathering user information".
what does it mean?. And how do i cox it to disappear.
I am using update retriever which is working .

It's been a while since I've seen mention of that error. For example, this thread:

...Which a few useful tidbits that may be worth reading it for, such as:

"Try looking in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\logs and at the file tvsu_log.txt. It logs each step, so you can see where it falls over and then look at the previous step to see what it was trying to do."

What version of System Update are you using?

This crippling started after i updated thinkvantage toolbox via update.
now i can't even undo it.
I am using system update ver 4 .
The notebook is a vintage piece so i know there willnot be any updates.
T41,2374-7FU,1.7 dothan,1.5gb,160gb,W7

some microsoft program did some registry changes and my
updates started again(both W7 and T41). This OS is weird.
