Can a T42 do 1920x1200?

#1 Post by awolfe63 » Thu Mar 17, 2005 6:26 pm

Does anyone know if a T42 (ATI 9600/64MB) can drive a 1920x1200 LCD display? What about a T43?

If you have an external monitor yes. You cannot do that on the laptop LCD. You don't want to deviate from the native LCD resolutions. i.e. XGA, SXGA+, or UXGA.

How? I can't seem to find that choice in the display modes list.

Do I need a different video driver?

ATI lists this as an available mode for the desktop 9600 - so I can't believe it's not in there someplace.

Don't you have a "Display all modes" check box in Advanced?

Yes. I get 1600x1200 modes and I get 2048x1536. Nothing in between.

Do I need a different .inf file?

You need to have a dock or port replicator in order to get the DVI interface. For software, read item 20 in this FAQ: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1689

Argh! I didn't say anything about DVI. I am using the VGA port.

I have a mini dock.

All of my desktop ATI cards provide many resolutions including 1920x1200.
My T42 with a 9600/64MB provides only a subset including 1600x1200 and 2048x1536.

Does anyone know if this is a hardware limitation or if this can be solved with a different driver?

A nifty program called powerstrip will let you adjust your available resolutions

Yes you can. The ATI is capable of driving this high resolution.

You can also use a T42 15" LCD with this high resolution.

You need to order the QXGA display from IBM and replace the screen and the LCD cable. Screen is Flexview also and available for special order and costs around $1200

Just search for the other thread in this forum for QXGA and read their experiences.

Powerstrip looks great - but modded Catalyst 5.3 drivers have solved my problem for now.
