T42P vs. T42

#1 Post by batrachian » Thu Mar 17, 2005 8:08 pm

I saw people always talk about T42P here. What's the difference between T42P and T42? How can I tell which one mine is?

thanks

T42p are the mobile workstation units -- they are the most powerful models of the T42 series. They usually have more RAM, faster hard drives, higher resolution screens, features like Bluetooth, etc... One feature that sets them apart in perticular (and is not available on any other T42) is the 128MB ATI FireGL T2 video card, in contrast to the T42's 64MB ATI Radeon 9600...

To check which one you have, look near the right-hand LCD hinge when your laptop is open. If it says T42, then it is a T42. If it says T42p, then it's a T42p.

Just like "none" mentioned:

T42
RAM 512MB
VIDEO 32 or 64MB (performance designed more toward general use)
HDD 40 or 80GB (5400rpm)

T42p
RAM 1024MB (one block)
VIDEO 128MB (performance designed more toward applications)
HDD 60GB (7200rpm)

Physically, the only difference is that label that none mentioned
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

Actually, you've left out the most critical differentiator (besides the UXGA) -- the OpenGL graphics drivers which are required for certain CAD and content creation programs. For T4X vs T4xp differences including the programs that need the OpenGL drivers, see the FAQ in my signature. It's all there... :)

The only real difference throughout every model seems to be the video card, since my T42 has all things you mentioned (1400x1050, Bluetooth, 7k60 HDD, etc), but video is limited to 64MB.
What about the batteries? I assume the p-models always come with the 9cell-type, don't they?

...ok, ok I´d paid much more for the "p" for just the Video 128MB...
