OK when you did so did you do the following?

When updating the system unit serial number, the information must
be entered in the following syntax:
1S26474AU78F12345
where,
1S preceeds Type number, Model, and then Serial number

Also, the maintenance disk should give the option to reset the UUID. If you change the type, model or serial number you should also reset the UUID to reflect this change.

Let us know how you get on.

As for changing the model number with the BIOS update - that is for large enterprise customers to allow all T40 (for example) machines to be treated as one type/model combination for rolling out images using Image Ultra Builder. AFAIK it will not directly affect what the BIOS reports.

I got a problem .

There is no option to reset the UUID on the maintenace disk

When I select option 4 (assign UUID) I got the folowing message = "Valid UUID has been already stored"

Where could I find an option to reset UUID ?

I think it is 3 - Delete S/N data from EEPROM

BUT THEN i HAVE TO DO A CODE to delete the UUID. What is this code ?

Yves,

I think we should restart from scratch:

Boot the machine with the maintenance diskette in the floppy drive.

Highlight "1 - Set system identification" - press enter.

to remove the serial number:
Choose "3 - Delete S/N data from EEPROM" - to do this type "3" and enter.
then when it asks you for the Device Type number type "20" after the "?"

After that to reset the serial number:
Choose "1 - Add S/N data to EEPROM" - to do this type "1" and enter.
then when it asks you for the Device Type number type "20" after the "?"
Type in the type, model and serial number in the following format:
1S2373GEU5555555
(obviously using the serial number of your own machine)
Make sure the 1S is typed before and that there are no spaces or other characters where there shouldn't be!

Then type "9" to return to the main menu.

Move down to the option "4 - Assign UUID" and select.
Once it has done what it has to do it will prompt you to press enter - do so.
You will be returned to the main menu.

At this point you can use "F3" to exit and the machine will reboot.

Now go into the BIOS (F1 on boot) and check what is stated in the field "System-unit serial number". Hopefully this should be your correct type, model and serial number. If it is correct - try using the software installer again. If it is incorrect then you have done something wrong - so try these instructions from the start again.

Let us know how it goes.

SUCCESS !!!!!

Impossible to see "1S" When I do F1.

But it is there with the maintenance disk

I removed "Z1" at the end of the serial number

And now it is working!!!

Congratulations

IBM Thinkpads are good machines (but inferior quality of PANASONIC )

But ThinkPad support is the best . far away from competitors

Thank you again for your help, time, and support

Much better quality : screen are brighter, wake from standbay is faster, build quality is better.

It is made in Japan quality (Almost prefect). ThinkPads are made in China quality.

There is a big diffrence!

But design is better for the ThinkPad.

Also there is ZERO support for PANASONIC. No service in France. No repair , etc I dont know what will hapen if my CF29 has a problem!

IBM support is excellent in France

Prices are double for Panasonic.

For Office use, I will never use a PANASONIC. But for outside, I prefer a reliable PANASONIC like the Y2 series (which I will purchase next )

One more data point for the installer's string of successes.

While the installer wasn't listed as an available download for my venerable 2645-9FU 600X, I decided to install the software and take it up for a spin.

Worked perfectly. Found and installed all the latest updates and my PIII 850MHz Frankenpad is running better than ever!

Next up? Gonna' dig out a 600E and try it on that!

Invalid Machine Type

#101 Post by JohnFischer » Sat Apr 09, 2005 12:51 am

:D
Thanks to IBM on-site service, a technician came to my T41 and updated the UUID and serial number. Then the new Software Installer program worked like a charm.
All I can say is: Hallelujah!

Now everything on the system is current including BIOS.
Thanks to James and all your posts that hinted at this as a solution. I'll have to keep checking back here for new things to solve

Based In UK

******************************* SYSTEM SUMMARY *******************************
OS information: Microsoft Windows 2000
OS version: 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4
Processor: x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9
Memory: 523,248 kb
BIOS version: 1.08 (1GET36WW)
Machine type-Model: 2653H6G

ThinkPad Software Installer 3.01.0503

I get to the screen entitled "Download Packages" that lists the packages to be updated. All the ones to be updated are ticked.

The progress bar and the "Stop" button are greyed out.

The both "Back", Next" and "Cancel" buttons are enabled.

I press the "Next" button, at this point the display refreshes and the "Back" button is now disabled. Nothing happens from here on out, no attempt is made to connect to the internet (the earlier stages of the process did make such attempts).

Is the AutoUpdate still working for everyone? On both a T42 & R52 it searches for drivers but hangs when its searching online (I think). tried it several times today and yesterday. Anyone have any luck?

G-Man,

I just ran the TP Software Installer, I downloaded the new IBM Wireless LAN Adapter Software (11a/b/g) driver (v. 4.0.100.140a), but it shows up yellow and tells me I have to return to the first screen and select uninstall to get rid of the previous version. So I click "Back", select "Uninstall currently installed drivers", click "Next", highlight IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter Software (v. 2.4.1.12), and click "Remove" . . . and it's still there. I've tried removing it with WinXP's Add/Remove Programs feature, and no dice there either. Any hints?

Have you restarted your TP? Try to remove it manually in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Right click on 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter>and Uninstall (if it still doesn't work, disable it first then uninstall).

Hope it helps.
