Do you get a message when you try to plug in a USB 2.0 device? What is the message?

Yeah I get a message saying USB device not recognized one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it.for assistance in solving this problem, click this messagge. I've clicked the bubble and it tells me to reinsert the device i do and i get the same message. ive tried updating the driver for the usb and when i do it says that windows could not find a better drive or something like that.

If you've tried multiple USB drives (like a low powered flash drive) and it still gives the same error, you have a loose Southbridge. It requires 1) a systemboard replacement or 2) a Southbridge reflow. #1 is doable by someone who is moderately handy, #2 is best left to a professional.

Boot up with an Ubuntu live CD to see if it still works.

By the way, here's a fix that sometimes fixes this. In fact it's so easy it probably won't help (just because of the perversity of Murphy's Law)...

http://www.online-tech-tips.com/compute ... ecognized/

...the gist of which involves simply leaving your computer unplugged for a while.

Another easy fix I saw was the guy who was running too many unpowered USB devices from his ports, this was verified by plugging them in one at a time until the error occurred. A powered USB hub solved that one.

The third and somewhat more complex of the easiest fixes:

  • Locate the file INFCACHE.1 in C:\Windows\inf

Right click on the INFCACHE.1 file, select Properties >Security > Edit,
and give your account full control.

Delete INFCACHE.1 (Or just to be safe, rename it to INFCACHE.1.BAK
or temporarily move to your desktop but you shouldn't need to,
windows doesn't need that file to run, and if it needs to it recreates it).

    REBOOT

Hope this helps...
