Ide Controller or ??? any ideas?

#1 Post by biged143 » Fri Jan 14, 2011 4:03 pm

I have a T42 that is driving me nuts!! On boot it says no OS found,I cannot get to the recovery partition using F11 . In bios I cannot see the hdd or the DVD rw (am I supposed to be able to ?) Trying to load a new hdd I get the error message no hard drive found. I think it is the ide controller but have no idea what it looks like or where it is to check the solder. Any suggestions? Thank You !

Welcome to the forum!

Is this a HDD that was working before, and now it's not. Or, is this a replacement drive? If the later, it's most likely just not installed correctly, and some of the pins are not making contact. Best results will be attained using a caddy with all four screws to guide the drive into the socket. Also, you are aware that the T42 drive goes in upside down (label facing down), right?

Hope some of this is at least a little helpful...

Hmmm...OK, so can you boot from a CD? What if you press F12 during boot, do you get any available options? What are the boot order setting in the BIOS?

Is the T42 a 14" screen model?

You need a different HD cover for a 15" unit, since the HD is placed deeper within the chassis.

The drive caddy/covers are different between the 14" and 15" models. If you were to pull a HDD from a 14" model and slide it into a 15" machine with the 14" caddy and cover still attached, the pins won't even come close to reaching the socket.

Doh! George already posted while I was writing.
