T40p lcd issue
T40p lcd issue
I received my donor machine to help in the rehab/upgrade of my T40. The lcd has a problem that I have never encountered. The backlight comes on but there is no image. Bad lcd panel? I don't know. The issue persists across two different machines so I am confident that the issue is isolated to the T40p's panel. Any suggestions? Thanks, Keith

Re: T40p lcd issue
If it's just a plain white image, then it is most likely a loose connection at the back of the LCD panel or a bad LCD cable.
Re: T40p lcd issue
That is the look of it. Plain white image. If it's a cable failure, would it have failed at the hinged section? These cables are not interchangable are they. XGA and SXGA
Thanks again, Keith

Re: T40p lcd issue
The cables are not interchangeable. It would most likely have come loose at the back of the LCD, but a failure near the hinge is possible.
Re: T40p lcd issue
I'll open the back of the lcd cover tomorrow and take a look. I'll report my findings. Thanks again, Keith

Re: T40p lcd issue
Thanks for the information concerning the fuses and their location/protection. Tomorrow looks like a rainy day and a good day to diagnose the board. I have a board from an A31. Any idea if the fuses on the A31 can be used on the T40? After determining the same value of course.
Thanks again, Keith

Re: T40p lcd issue
Sure, if they are the same value it would work. Unless you are good with very small component level soldering, it is recommended to piggyback solder the new fuse on top of the blown one.
Re: T40p lcd issue
Now I feel a little better. Here is my story.
I bought a T40 off Ebay last week for $20.50
, only one other bidder. It was sold "as is, for parts" it had no hard drive, or battery and was listed as untested.
I was not expecting much but when I plugged it in and pushed the power button sure enough it worked. The keyboard and palmrest were like new as well as the LCD top cover. The LCD was pink and obviously on its way out. In a rush and being careless I swapped the LCD while the unit was on. Sure enough, dead motherboard
.
I have not had time yet to remove the motherboard and check the fuses if in fact thats all that was fried. If any one else has done similar and knows which fuse is or might be shot please post. If I find one I will.
Lesson learned. Don't get in a rush and get careless. You can not swap components while powered up.
