Win2k or XP for T22 900mhz?

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Sat Mar 19, 2005 12:22 pm

Hello forum. After years of faithful service, my trusty 560x is being retired and I'm impatiently awaiting a T22, 900mhz with 256MB (which I'll upgrade to 512 in a month or two). I'll be doing a fresh install on the machine.

I'm wondering if I'd see a performance difference between Win2k or XP Pro on a 900mhz machine. I'll have plenty of RAM for either, so RAM shouldn't be an issue.

I've read some threads on this in the OS part of the forum, but it's not always what processing power the posters' machines have.

I'd be interested if anyone has any actual experience.

Thanks,

Nolo

^^ditto

i have worked with several old machines of similar specs (though not TPs), and XP runs a bit to slow to be fully usable.

win2k or linux are your best bets...

I had an X22 850Mhz with 512Mb of ram that came preloaded with XP Pro and it ran just fine. Set XP (My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Performance) for maximum performance and get rid of the mucky, useless, bloated eye candy and XP will work fine. Been there, done that. Windows 2000 is a fine system but it is getting old and out of support. Still, if you want that instead - it works.

What JD said! XP Pro.

Save W2K for machines with non-Speedstep processors.

Forget Win2k, and upgrade to WinXP Pro.
Much more stable and even faster. You might want to set the desktop to Win Classic, and it flies!

I used Win2k for years on a T22, and never regretted to upgrade to WinXP-

I run Win2kPro on my T22 (512) and like it a lot.

XP Pro is fine as long as you do what others mention, dump the eye candy, turn off the menu fade effects and the like and it is quite nice, but I still prefer 2000.

Either way you will be well served. If you have no personal preference either way, go with XP for the auto updates which will be going away in 2000 sometime, and especially for the XP anti spyware tool.

It all depends on what you will use primarely the laptop for. Both OS will run flawlessly in that Thinkpad.

If you are using that laptop more a everyday thing including internet, games, etc, I would use XP. If instead, you just want to take the more juice out of it for a single application (server, photoshop...), I would use win2k.

Any of them will be ok really.
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

XP for sure. And max out your RAM.

Under Services, stop and dissable Themes... That is a huge increase in speed
Makes my x20 600mhz 320mb run like a champ, it even runs ok with them on.

My wife is on my A20 with a 900mhz and that runs great as well, just get at least 320mb ram

If you are going to upgrade RAM go with XP pro. You can change the settings to classic view so that it will not eat up a lot of resources to make it look pretty.
Also XP boots up a lot faster than 2000 and it will be supported by MS longer than WIN2000.

I have XP Pro on my 750 MHz T20 with 384K RAM and it runs great.

Forget the IBM Active Desktop though unless you like waiting about a minute for your desktop to load.

I'd go for XP, too. Boots faster and has better, more up-to-date driver support. Performance-wise, people here have already commented on what to turn off.

I'm running XP Pro SP2 on a 600 MHz X20. Maxing out the memory gave a big performance boost, though. A fast hard drive helps, too ;-)

XP Pro runs just fine on my old 600X. SP2 makes the machine much more secure than W2K ever will be.

For those still thinking Windows 2000 because they prefer it, I set my screen preferences so XP looks and feels like my Windows 2000 machine. No frills, just business, and it comes out (except for a few icons) just like W2K. I even put the Office Shortcut Bar back into Office 2003. If I load up a W2K Virtual Machine, it looks like a twin of my XP Pro Host.
