[NOT SOLVED]rotate screen on t42 ?

#1 Post by UDUN » Mon Jan 31, 2011 7:57 am

Well - I spent all morning and I am still at the start - my GPU is Ati mobility radeon 9600.
My display driver info :

Code: Select all

ATI Control Panel CPanel 6.14.10.5154
ATI Display Driver Driver 8.133.2.1.1.1-070206a-043154C
FIRE GL driver for 3D Studio MAX/VIZ	FGLMax 6.14.10.5005
IBM Capture Drivers Phildec	5.1.2600.6v14_certified
It is the latest offered by the t42 lenovo downloads page : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 55386.html
There is no item for rotating the screen in the control panel - and I need it badly
I suspect there are more recent versions of the drivers/Control panel from ATI but I cannot seem to find something reliable
My exact model number is 2373-3VU and I am on XP SP3 Pro, english
Please help !
Thanks :)

EDIT 2011.02.22 : SEEMS TO HAVE BURNED MY CARD
IGNORE THE REST OF THE POST
The link above was indeed old but it pointed to the right direction : I downloaded the mod tool from here and the newest desktop drivers : http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/w ... ng=English - and followed instructions on the first link - now I use irotate to happily rotate my monitor.
not really thoroughly tested but seems to work !

No, that sounds like the signaling going to the LCD has become invalid somehow. I've seen this on other laptops. It could be that your GPU is attempting to turn off the LCD, but the backlight has stayed on, at least from how you describe it.

In any case, ATI Tray Tool has rotation functionality. It is part of the Omega Drivers, which incidentally I've been using on my T42 instead of the Lenovo drivers, and they work somewhat better. No Mobility Modding is required.

Thanks for feedback !
Still I can not start the machine so I don't really know what's wrong
And I did manage to roll back the driver at some point
Manually closing the LCD display shuts the screen off alright btw (that is while it works (before the wind shows up))
I will give a try to those omega drivers if I manage
Thanks !

Try the free program "iRotate"....

#10 Post by Johan » Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:01 am

Although it is not evident (to me!) if you are still looking for a method/program to rotate the image on the LCD, then - if still of interest - try see the following post Help needed to rotate or flip image on screen T40 and the link to the free program iRotate.

Johan
IBM T42p's (2373-Q1U & -Q2U): 2.1 GHz, 15" UXGA FlexView, 2 GB RAM, 128 MB FireGL T2, 128 GB 1.8" SATA SSD, IBM a/b/g, BT, Win 7 Ultimate
IBM T42 (2373-N1G): 1.8 GHz, 15" SXGA+ FlexView, 2 GB RAM, 64 MB Radeon 9600, 64 GB 1.8" SATA SSD, IBM a/b/g, BT, Win 7 Ultimate

Anyway iRotate does not work out of the box with t42 (2373-3vu) - at least with the lenovo drivers (check the OP). It does nothing
Thanks for feedback anyway :)

Download the Omega drivers but don't install them yet.
Uninstall your current gfx drivers, as well as that iRotate program.
Then reboot, upon which Windows should install default gfx drivers (if on the laptop), otherwise it will install generic XP ATI drivers.

Uninstall the gfx drivers again, but don't reboot.
Go into Device Manager/Monitor, and if you still find any gfx drivers there, uninstall those as well.
Now install the Omega drivers and after that reboot.
What gives?

Johan, does iRotate work on your T42p? It does nothing on mine. Did you do anything special?

Also, I've installed the Omega drivers, but although they show rotation options, the rotation doesn't work for me either [ http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=94424 ]. Was anybody with T42p using ATI Mobilty FireGL T2 actually able to achieve the screen rotation?

Thanks.

Also, dr_st, did you have to set the Omega drivers in any special way for the rotation to work? I see the rotation options, but no rotation happens on my T42p with FireGL T2 after I install the Omega drivers [ http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 59#p618159 ]. Thanks.

You know, I don't recall having to do anything special for it to work, but I don't remember everything I did (it was such a long time ago. ;)).

Thanks - I am unable to boot - just for a very little time after some ~5-10 efforts - usually I do not even see the IBM screen - when however I do manage everything works for some 5 mins till this "wind" effect appears - and then everything hangs (and screen goes off and on and off and on and kaput !)
Something is wrong...
Last time I did boot I uninstalled the ATI - which I had already disabled hoping some VGA would take control - and I think it completely disappeared from dev manager
I'll keep you posted

It sure seems that way, and the inability to rotate the screen might turn out to be the very least of your problems.

Good luck.

I think your motherboard has a bad case of the loose GPU syndrome.
Check the second link in my signature (Reflow Repairs) and contact Nick there about a possible fix.

Yes indeed I had this problem before I knew what a problem is
