Help me evaluate two T43 EDU offerings

#1 Post by jtreble » Sun Mar 20, 2005 5:23 pm

I'm a Canadian student at SUNY Potsdam (in the lovely state of New York) and, consequently, have access to two T43 IBM EDU offerings there. See,
https://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalp ... y=Template

I can't cross-reference these two IBM EDU model types (2668C4U and 1871C1U) to anything useful to determine if these represent a real savings.

What do you think?

those 2 prices are just regular ibm edu prices on their website, i suggest you go to your school's computer store and ask for their prices...

some schools (including mine) can get much cheaper prices than the ibm edu online prices.

and by the way, i wont consider the c1u, it has integrated graphics card, look at the c2u at least.

but the thing with edu models is that none of them have fingerprt reader...

also bear in mind that you are NOT limited to the educational models (the ones designated with a "edu"), you can get any model listed on their regular edu site http://www.ibm.com/education/us/, click on "student pc purchases" on the right column. they have the same discounts.

get the c1u...the price for the other model is ridiculous...3200 for that? come on...

you can get another 512MB ram, replace the hd by a 60gb 7200....and it still comes out much cheaper.

it does not make sense to buy the more expensive one....also there is a 60 days waiting for that model

Look at the tabook, check for t43 edu models and give ibm a call, don't just look at what they show on website...you can find much better models, price from the tabook

No, don't get the C1U because it is XGA (1024x768) and it is very expensive for XGA. Most people in this forum prefer a 14" SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) version. Either look at the entire educational discount price list as a previous post suggested or look into the 226846U which is about $1700 discounted. See FAQ in my signature for more details.

There's no need to blacklist all XGA models - they are fine for most people's needs especially students. In this case this XGA model is expensive but students should be looking to buy cheaper machines generally so he'll just have to look at (cheaper) alternatives.

davidlg16,

Thanks for the info. I didn't find the prices on "http://www.ibm.com/education/us/" to be any great bargain. Dealing with the SUNY Potsdam Computer Store would also be a pain because I commute from Ottawa to their satellite campus at Ogdensburg weekly and don't go to the main Potsdam campus at all. None of the SUNY Potsdam Computer Store info is online of course :).

I think my best bet will be Ottawa/Carleton U. here in Ottawa, IBM Canada Refurb./Off Lease or Bill. The Canadian EDU offerings aren't very good.

Thanks.

baraider,

I don't understand why you don't think USD $2,370 isn't a good price for,
- T43p 2668
- Pentium M 770 2.13 GHz (Centrino 915PM-E, 2 MB - L2)
- XP Pro
- 1 GB DDR II SDRAM - PC2-4200/533 MHz
- 80 GB HD (5400rpm) - a little slow I'll admit
- DVD/RW - plug-in module - I assume this means DVD/CD RW ready but none supplied
- Mdm (not sure what this is)
- LAN E/FE/GE, 802.11a/b/g (Intel PRO)
- ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL V3200, PCI-16 (128)
- 15" UXGA (FlexView, 1600 x 1200)
- CDC modem
- 6 cell battery
- Fingerprint? (not sure about this - one doc says yes, another says no)
- no Bluetooth

Doesn't the T43p range start at approx. USD $3,200 (I can't compare at the moment because IBM USA/Canada have removed the T43ps from their web site :))?

What am I missing here? Thanks.

John,

Start here: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/suny.html or here's a 15" UXGA T43 for you, $2,370.00:
https://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalp ... il_status=

Or here: https://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalp ... y=Template

They'll deliver the unit to the bookstore at Ogdensburg or to the Administrator's office if there's no bookstore. Free shipping I believe, but you will pay NY state sales tax.
