Just reinstalled XP, no wireless

#1 Post by ccookie66 » Wed Feb 09, 2011 10:44 pm

Hello, I just installed Windows XP Pro sp3, on IBM ThinkPad T40, and I have to use LAN only, because there is no wireless. I tried many drivers from the Lenovo site, but I can't find it.

What's the full 7-character model number of that T40, 237?-???

Located on the sticker which houses the serial (don't post that) and production date on the bottom of the unit.

According to IBM/Lenovo, your machine left the factory with no wireless card installed:

Product: ThinkPad T40 2373-8CU [change]
Original description: P M 1.5GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD(slim), Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), Wireless upgradeable, Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 6 cell battery, WinXP Pro

Have you installed one, or know for a fact that there's one in there?

Well, when I took apart the LCD screen to replace it, up the side of it, there is a wire, and at the top right corner, there is a plate thing, might be a wireless card?? There is also another one at the top of the screen, right by the light.

No.

The wireless card would be located under the touchpad on T4x series. What you saw were antennae extensions in the lid, not the wireless card.

Ok. Well, I found this old Netgear wireless card that plugs into the side of the laptop (not USB) and I just set it up and it works fine. So I will just stick with this, at least I have wireless! 8)

Good to hear.

That being said, internal wireless cards get better range and performance than PCMCIA ones. and can be found quite cheaply nowadays...so spending $10-15 and 20 minutes to install it (presuming you've never done it before) might be worth it...

My $0.02 only...

Good luck.

Even cheaper than that actually. I picked up an Intel 2915ABG from eBay for $8.50 shipped a couple weeks ago for my 570e.

Do be sure that the wireless card you purchase, if you do, is under IBM's whitelist. If not, there may be an 1802 unauthorized card error, and you'll have to either perform a BIOS modification or flash your card.

Some compatible cards are:

-IBM Dual-Band 11a/b Wi-Fi Wireless Mini PCI Adapter
-Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b
-Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter
