I got my T42p to pause during boot, and then I pressed the ESC key. A BIOS message screen appeared that included the line

FOR EVALUATION ONLY. NOT FOR RESALE.
Build Time: 01/20/05 13:08:28

Did IBM goof?

Either they used a evaluation kit while builiding this bios. Or someone was lazy to type up the actual strings did a copy - paste from another file lying around !. Even the copyright says 2001 ,2004 and not 2005 even though it was released in 2005.

I think it should not matter for the end user, may be they will correct it in the next release or release a new one to correct it out.

I ordered directly from IBM - EPP. It arrived in January.

I think the BSA pays up to a $100K bounty for anybody turning in a corporation using pirated software...

I work for IBM and noticed your message. We haven't seen this issue in the field before now. However, if you would like to privately message me the serial and MTM of your system I will have our guys take a look at the issue.

What you are seeing is a BIOS build error, however, there is nothing wrong with the BIOS except for the "Evaluation only" error message. We are currently working the update into the next release of BIOS for the affected systems. Once the updates and testing is completed they will be posted to the web for download. I do not as of yet have a timeline on this release date.

After researching this issue we have seen it in the following systems and BIOS Levels:

I wonder how long it will take until your PN-box gets flooded with requests to fix the "noisy fan problem"

Which is precisely why most of the IBM folks who visit remain in stealth mode.

Sandtigrr is only one of many IBM employees who are frequent visitors and posters here in the Forums.
