i've got an Hitachi E7K60 installed on my T42. The E stands for enhanced and i was told told that they are used for for blade servers...
anyway, i could get an Hitachi 7K100 for S$360, which is abt US$200 based on US$1=S$1.80. Do you all think its a gd deal?

While we are at it...
I thought I would post my query too...
I'm about to order T43, and have opted for
[0.] 60GB @ 7200 rpm.
(it's Hitachi travelstar 7K60 ATA-100)
But this morning I saw this thread and was tempted to go for higher capacity HDD!
[1.] 80GB @5400 rpm
I won't be running disk intensive tasks often. So in that case should I
opt for [1]? It does give me 20gig extra, but is performance loss too noticable?
Is 7200rpm audibly too loud compared to 5400rpm ones? Does 7200 hog battery too much?
A comparision posted by someone on this thread is about a year old. So thought of putting this Q forth again.

The performance drop is barely noticeable for 98% of things you will be running on that HDD; I have used both under similar conditions and never have noticed much of a difference.

Get either Seagate's or Hitachi's 7K100 if you can afford it.
I've just upgraded from a 7K60 to 7K100 on my T42 last month, and the difference was very noticeable.
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20802
==>for my T42 no problems at all. ie: very minimal sound increase, very minimal heat increase, very minimal battery performance decrease.
The 7K100 is quite noticeably faster than 7K60 than it appears on paper, because of much higher data density.
ie: You can now multitask much more gracefully using 7K100.
eg: copying from CD to 7K100 HDD, the 7K100 HDD activity light actually turns on intermittently, freeing up CPU cycles for more mutitasking (in contrast, the 7K60 activity light was constantly on and Windows UI start to get sluggish if too many other programs are running).
eg: ditto for copying data from external USB hard drive to your 7K100, as compared to 7K60.
I would imagine the 7K80 is very similar to 7K100, as it has same data density...

If there was, it was too small for me to notice (under 2-1 minutes); sound was slightly increased with the 7200RPM model, but it was minor and to be expected when compared to another one I had and it was easily mitigated with spin-down enabled to the level of the 5400RPM model.
In fact, I have Linux installed on the 60GB 7200RPM HDD, in the Ultrabay now, and Windows XP installed on the 80GB 5400RPM, my main HDD. I swapped them once to test and they both worked like they normally would.

Well, currently I'm only taking what Lenovo site has to offer.w0qj wrote:Get either Seagate's or Hitachi's 7K100 if you can afford it.
And the site where I CTO'ed my system, doesn't mention a [censored] about
HDD used. It was only in the final quotation that IBM/Lenovo rep sent me
had the HDD model name. Lenovo's accessories (Storage) page doesn't
talk about details other than latency, avg seek, etc.
Thanks, I'll go through that too!

Thanks Chris & w0qj, I believe upgrading from 60GB @ 7200 to 80GB @5400
is worth it!
Hey, BTW, any idea how to know the exact brand of HDD that I'll be getting
while I'm CTO'ing?
Actually I would have considered 80GB @7200, but apparently it seems to be
gone from their CTO website. Last time I noted down details, it was very
much there.

A darn good price would be a plus!
To go back to the original question above, some of the answers seem to be alluding to the fact that there is no such thing as a 80GB/7200 rpm hard drive (at least that's the impression I got). I just wanted to make sure that you realize this is untrue...they definitely do exist because I have one in my CTO T43 system ordered 3 months ago. Granted, it was hard to find and I had to go through the education website to have the option to purchase it, but it definitely isn't vaporware. Hopefully this link works so you can see for yourself:
Lenovo education website CTO page
If the link doesn't work, the options you have to choose from are:
Hard drive [1]
40GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
60GB 5400rpm Hard Drive [add $27.00]
60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive [add $72.00]
80GB 5400rpm Hard Drive [add $90.00]
80GB 7200rpm Hard Drive [add $104.40]
100GB 5400rpm Hard Drive [add $149.40]
I would like to believe that since they exist for CTO T43s, they should also exist for T42s, but then again I could be completely wrong.
Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents...

I have an 80GB (5GB free) 5400RPM on the Dell D810 (work laptop)<-I KNOW, it is not a TP..but the D810 is not a bad machine!!!
Today I received the 80GB 7200RPM I will be installing! I run about 30+ different applications at once, with dual screens; so I think I will benefit from the 7200RPM drive in this setup! (SMS, VIrtual PC, AD tools, outlook, citrix apps, RDP, etc, etc, etc..)
Model is HTS721080G9AT00; Hitachi made and branded; fresh of the assembly line with a build date of JAN-06
I will let you all know if I see an improvement.
Running a P M 1.86 (533MHZ) with 1.5GB ram, 128MB Video card.

I have a pair of 100GB 7200rpm hard disk drives in this T43. They are aftermarket drives (not from Lenovo). I bought this T43 as an open bay CTO. So this capacity is possible in the 7200rpm spindle speed.

Is the 100GB-7200rpm Hitachi stable and dependable for a T41?
I may go that route for my upgrade.
Thanks

Re: Multiple partitions yes/no?
That's what I do. Most of the rational behind multiple partions is based on the premise of expensive storage and slow and even more expensive backup.d94dsj wrote:I would go for a single C: partition and frequently run a good defragmenter utility on it
Now a days storage is cheap and that means backup is also fast and cheap, as you can use cloning to create a bootable image of the entire primary store as a backup approach on the same class of media as the primary store (i.e. an HDD to HDD clone).
Cheers,
Bill
