Accident with T30
Accident with T30
OK, OK my bad. I fell yesterday and as I was falling, I stepped onto the corner of my wife's T30. The computer was left slightly open and my foot shut the top forcefully and there was a bad plastic "crack" sound, although not very loud. Luckily, we have a docking station and the computer functions fine, but the screen seems to be dead. There is no glaring visible damage, but when I look across the top of the T30 when it is closed, there is an indentation (3/32" at most) about 1" to the right of the battery light location. What are your recommendations? Should I just replace the screen or have the computer tested more extensively by IBM? If I replace the screen, can it be done outside of a Clean Room environment?
Look at the display under a bright light with the computer on. Can you see the desktop very dimly? if so then you just busted the backlight.
Backlight replacement is possible, though if you have broken glass from the backlight tube inside the display you should probably just go ahead and replace the LCD Assembly.
It is not that difficult if that's all it is. The instructions are in the Hardare Maintenance Manual downloadable for the IBM support site.
Other options - take it to a local IBM Authorized service center. This will cost you several hundred bucks at a minimum but may help to placate the wife.
Or just get her a nice new T43. That would definitely get you out of the dog house.

Re: Accident with T30
If there is no visible damage I would check the warranty status. If it is under warranty I would call IBM @ 1-800-IBM-SERV for repair.bailey45 wrote:OK, OK my bad. BTW- If it is under wrnty, I would leave some of the details out during your conversation...
